Stella-Rae Zelnik – Smiles for Miles @ M16 Artspace

A study in camaraderie is the best way to describe the exhibition of photographs by Stella Rae Zelnik at M16 Artspace. Motorcycle riders at times suffer from a bad press. These photos have the marks of someone who loves her subject.and can portray them with sympathy and a sense of beauty.

The photos apparently were taken over two years through a friendship with a group of motorcycle riders on their day trips in the region. The photos take up themes of splendid isolation, speed, independence and interdependence. The remarkable striking beauty of a big bike standing by an isolated roadside contrasts with high speed travel on long roads. The people are often those stereotypes of long hair, beards, tatoos and denim. The images in black and white tell a great story of of travel, fun, friendship and adventure.
